ACCRA, Ghana — The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar/Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Dr. Dangut, a Nigerian national, assumes office for a five-year tenure running from October 2026 to September 2031. He succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia as the 14th Registrar to Council, following the ratification of his appointment by WAEC’s International Governing Board at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana.
A Career Built on Educational Assessment and Leadership
Born on October 2, 1967, Dr. Dangut began his professional journey in education in 1994 as an examiner with WAEC while teaching at St. Louis College, Jos. He officially joined the Council staff in 1998.
Dr. Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture (1991), a Master of Science (1994), and a Ph.D. (2017) in Animal Science, alongside a Master of Education in Administration and Planning (2020).
Over his 28-year career at WAEC, Dr. Dangut has held key administrative, operational, and leadership roles across Nigeria, including:
- Assistant Registrar / Subject Officer, Test Development Division, Lagos (1998–2005)
- Senior Assistant Registrar & Deputy Branch Controller, Uyo Branch (2005–2008) and Bauchi Branch (2008–2011)
- Branch Controller, Yola Branch Office (2011–2019)
- Deputy Registrar / Controller, Post Examinations Department (2019–2020)
- Zonal Coordinator, Ikeja Zonal Office (2020–2023)
- Head of National Office (HNO), WAEC Nigeria (October 2023 – October 2026)
Driving Innovation and Technological Transformation
During his tenure as Head of the National Office in Nigeria, Dr. Dangut led major technological advancements to enhance examination integrity, delivery, and operational efficiency. Key innovations implemented under his leadership include:
- The rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE (CB-WASSCE).
- Question paper serialization and a Digital Electronic Marking System.
- Digital tools such as the WAEC Digital Certificate Portal, the E-Study Platform, and the Digital Records Archive.
- Enhanced automated systems for examination logistics, timetable management, and monitoring examiner attendance.
In addition to his administrative roles, Dr. Dangut represented WAEC on the governing boards of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), and the Grange Educational Foundation.
Professional Standing and Board Roles
Dr. Dangut currently serves as the Regional Representative for the West African Sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA). He is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and an active member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM).
An accomplished scholar with numerous published papers in national and international journals, Dr. Dangut is married with children and enjoys swimming, tennis, and farming.
