The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports claiming that it directed schools to limit the subjects Senior Secondary students can register for in the forthcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, the Council described the reports as false and misleading, stressing that it had not issued any directive restricting candidates’ subject choices for the 2026 examination.
“WAEC wishes to categorically distance itself from this unfounded assumption. The Council did not issue any such directive(s) nor restrict the choice of students to offer any particular subject(s) for WASSCE (SC) 2026 as alleged,” the statement read.
The Council explained that the development and regulation of school curricula in Nigeria fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, not WAEC. It emphasized that its role is to implement government education policies through examination and assessment.
“As a law-abiding organization, WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country. The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government,” Adeshina added.
WAEC therefore advised schools, parents, and the general public to disregard the reports circulating in the media and to rely only on official communications from the Council regarding examination matters.
The statement further assured that all candidates sitting for the 2026 WASSCE would be treated fairly and given equal opportunity for assessment, reaffirming the Council’s commitment to professionalism and excellence in serving the Nigerian child.
