LAGOS, Nigeria – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for School Candidates, revealing that 61.54 per cent of candidates obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of the Nigeria National Office (HNO) of WAEC, during a press briefing held at the Council’s national headquarters in Yaba, Lagos.
According to Dr. Dangut, 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools registered for the examination, while 1,950,726 candidates eventually sat for the examination conducted between April 24 and June 19, 2026. The examination was also administered in selected schools in Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea where the Nigerian curriculum is used.
He disclosed that 1,200,514 candidates, representing 61.54 per cent of those who sat the examination, obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. However, the performance represents a 1.42 per cent decline compared with the 2025 examination.
The WAEC HNO also stated that 1,834,695 candidates, representing 94.05 per cent, have had their results fully processed and released. Meanwhile, the results of 116,031 candidates remain under processing due to issues that are still being resolved. He assured candidates that efforts were ongoing to release the outstanding results within the next few days.
On examination malpractice, Dr. Dangut announced that the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 per cent of the total candidates who sat the examination, have been withheld over alleged involvement in various forms of malpractice. He noted that the figure is lower than the 9.7 per cent recorded in the 2025 examination.
He attributed many of the malpractice cases to the increasing use of mobile phones in examination halls and organised cheating in some schools, adding that all reported cases are being investigated before final decisions are taken by the appropriate WAEC committee.
Dr. Dangut further announced a major change in the result-checking process, explaining that WAEC has discontinued the issuance of Smart Identity Cards containing result checker PINs. Instead, candidates are now required to generate their Serial Number and PIN online through the Council’s Digital Certificate platform before checking their results.
He urged candidates who have met all their financial obligations to access their results through the WAEC results portal, while adding that digital certificates would become available within 48 hours after results are checked. Hard-copy certificates, he said, will be ready within 90 days of the release of the results.
