The West African Examinations Council, popularly known as WAEC , has reassured candidates, parents, school owners, and other stakeholders that the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates will continue smoothly despite the ongoing protest by some members of its workforce.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the examination body said it had already put adequate measures in place to ensure that the examination process remains seamless and uninterrupted across the country.

WAEC Says Examination Continues Unhindered

According to WAEC, the ongoing examination has continued without disruption since its commencement, despite the industrial action embarked upon by some aggrieved workers.

The Council stated that it remains committed to conducting a credible and successful examination for Nigerian students and insisted that candidates should not panic over the situation.

WAEC explained that it respects the rights of workers and unions to peacefully express their grievances within the ambit of the law. However, it stressed that it has taken every necessary step to protect the integrity and smooth conduct of the examination nationwide.

The Council further disclosed that discussions are already ongoing between its management and the protesting union in a bid to resolve the issues raised by the workers.

WAEC Explains Reduction in Examination Days

Reacting to concerns raised by the protesting union over adjustments in examination schedules, WAEC clarified that the reduction in examination days became necessary after the streamlining of subjects offered in the examination.

According to the Council, the number of subjects was reduced from 76 to 38, making it necessary to shorten the examination period to align with the new structure and the hybrid mode of conducting the examination.

The examination body maintained that the decision was purely administrative and aimed at improving efficiency in the conduct of the examination.

WAEC Denies Allegations of Unfair Treatment

WAEC also dismissed allegations by the union regarding alleged incessant dismissals and unfair disciplinary measures against staff members.

The Council stated that all disciplinary procedures and career progression matters are handled strictly in accordance with the WAEC staff handbook and relevant statutory provisions.

It described the allegations as false and misleading, adding that the organisation has consistently followed due process in handling internal staff matters.

Why WAEC Engaged Contract Staff

Addressing another issue raised by the union, WAEC defended its decision to engage contract Examination Officers and Assistant Examination Officers.

The Council explained that the move was introduced to help manage increasing workloads and ensure the smooth operation of examination processes across countries within the West African sub-region.

WAEC noted that the growing demands associated with conducting large-scale examinations made it necessary to introduce additional manpower support.

Candidates’ Future Remains Top Priority

While acknowledging that the workers’ protest may create anxiety among parents and candidates, WAEC assured the public that the future of students remains its top priority.

The Council said it has already implemented adequate contingency measures to ensure that the examination timetable remains unaffected throughout the exercise.

It also urged Nigerians to ignore rumours and misinformation capable of causing confusion regarding the conduct of the examination.

According to WAEC, all official information concerning the ongoing WASSCE is available only through its verified and accredited communication channels.

WAEC Reaffirms Commitment to Quality Assessment

The examination body reaffirmed its commitment to delivering credible and reliable educational assessment services to Nigerian students.

WAEC appreciated stakeholders for their trust and confidence in the organisation over the past 74 years, promising to sustain high standards in the conduct of public examinations.

The statement was signed by Moyosola F. Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, on behalf of the Head of National Office of WAEC.
