  • Fire Destroys Vehicles, Homes, and Causes Injuries as Residents Panic

An early Wednesday morning fire incident along the Ibafo section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, sparked by a petrol tanker fire, has resulted in significant destruction, including vehicles worth millions of naira, homes, and livestock, leaving local residents in a state of panic. Several individuals have also sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Details of the Incident

The fire erupted when a petrol tanker, loaded with fuel, overturned in front of a commercial bank along the expressway. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver is suspected to have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the loss of control and subsequent explosion of the tanker.

The petrol spill flowed through a drainage system, reaching a community approximately one kilometer from the expressway, exacerbating the situation.

Extent of Damage

The impact of the fire was devastating, with numerous buildings suffering shattered windows, damaged roofs, and cracked walls. Eyewitness Wasiu commented on the reckless driving of the tanker driver, stating, “The tanker was swaying before it fell and spilled its contents into the drainage. It didn’t catch fire immediately, as some individuals began scooping the fuel. However, after a few minutes, fire erupted from the other side of the expressway, escalating the situation.”

The fire also destroyed four tipper trucks parked at the Osadol Fuel Station and extended into nearby residential areas.

Community Reaction

Residents expressed their alarm as the fire spread rapidly while many were still asleep. Tunde Adewumi, a local resident, noted, “It was a serious incident, but thank God for the drainage system; otherwise, the damage could have been much worse. The fire injured about three people and damaged several buildings, primarily affecting those living near the drainage construction.”

Official Confirmation and Response

Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola stated that the tanker driver sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. She explained, “The incident involved a Fiat truck, but the driver’s name and address are currently unknown. The accident occurred when the driver lost control and collided with the roadside curb, causing the truck to overturn and catch fire. The flames spread to the truck and eventually engulfed it.”

Odutola added that the fire reached the Osadol Petrol Station, damaging two trucks parked outside. While the fire service was contacted, community members and police officers managed to control the flames before their arrival. The truck driver has since been taken to Real Divine Touch Hospital in Ibafo for medical treatment.

The petrol tanker fire along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with fuel transportation and the importance of safety protocols. As investigations continue, the community rallies to support those affected by the devastating incident.
