Kano Takes Bold Step: Revokes Private School Licences for Re-certification

The operational certificates for all private educational institutions operating within Kano State’s borders have been revoked.

After a lengthy meeting with private school owners, the news was made on Saturday, August 12, 2023.

The governor’s special adviser on private and nonprofit institutions, Baba Umar, outlined the government’s proposal to issue fresh certificates following a comprehensive re-registration procedure.

All private institutions must renew and submit their information as soon as possible using the brand-new forms.

“This move signifies our unyielding commitment to ensuring private schools align with the prescribed laws and regulations of our great state,” Umar remarked.

He emphasized the financial obligations of the school proprietors, noting, “It’s paramount for private school proprietors to honour their commitment of remitting the 10 per cent tax to the government. This dedication fuels advancements in our educational sector.”

Umar reassured all parties involved, emphasizing justice, fairness, and the paramount importance of maintaining operational standards, which include the proper learning environment, curriculum, facilities, and academic schedules.

Addressing the concerns of many, Umar expressed, “We prioritize the interests of parents and their children. Their future is our mission.”

Alhaji Muhammad Adamu, Chairman of the National Association of Private Schools Owners, Kano State Chapter, lauded the government’s intervention.

“This is a laudable stride toward uplifting our local education,” Adamu said, urging his fellow proprietors to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the government, embracing the reforms designed for the betterment of all stakeholders.

A standout moment in the meeting was the unveiling of cutting-edge software aimed at an exhaustive data collection of private and voluntary institutions throughout Kano.

New registration forms were also rolled out, ushering in an enhanced and meticulous registration process.

The reforms reflect Kano State’s renewed dedication to educational excellence and many hope this will set a new benchmark for other regions in Nigeria.
