Shell Reports Oil Spill Near Port Harcourt, Promises Investigation

📍 Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Shell Petroleum has confirmed an oil spill at Ogale, near Port Harcourt, following an overflow during flushing operations at a saver pit.

Shell’s Response & Ongoing Investigation

According to a Shell spokesperson, the company’s spill response team acted swiftly to contain the overflow and has alerted regulatory authorities.

“Arrangements are being made for a regulator-led joint visit to determine the cause and impact of the spill,” Shell stated.

Environmental Concerns & Local Reactions

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) reported that the spill started when an underground pit filled with crude overflowed into a pipeline within the Ogoni cleanup zone.

Decades of oil spills have devastated Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, damaging ecosystems, livelihoods, and public health.
