Tinubu Under Fire as Insecurity Worsens, US Deepens Counterterrorism Support in Nigeria

By DAYO ADESULU

Fresh concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis have sparked renewed criticism of President , following the gruesome killing of an abducted schoolteacher in Oyo State by suspected bandits.

Human rights lawyer has openly called on Tinubu to either decisively tackle terrorism and mass kidnappings across the country or resign from office as commander-in-chief.

The outrage followed the tragic death of Michael Oyedokun, a Mathematics teacher who was abducted alongside dozens of students and residents during coordinated attacks on schools and communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Teacher Killed After Abduction in Oyo

Oyedokun was among several victims kidnapped when armed men invaded Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, on May 15. Other schools reportedly attacked include Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and LA Primary School in Ogbomoso.

According to reports, at least 46 persons, most of them children between the ages of two and 16, were taken away during the attacks. The violence also claimed the lives of assistant headmaster Joel Adesiyan and a commercial motorcyclist.

A disturbing video allegedly released by the kidnappers later surfaced online, showing the teacher tied up moments before he was reportedly executed. The footage triggered widespread anger on social media and renewed fears over the safety of other captives still in the custody of the attackers.

Following the attacks, the Oyo State Government ordered the temporary closure of schools in four local government areas while security agencies intensified rescue operations.

Inibehe Effiong Blasts Tinubu Over Insecurity

Reacting to the development, Effiong accused the federal government of failing Nigerians amid rising insecurity, kidnappings, and killings across several parts of the country.

In a strongly worded statement shared on X, the lawyer declared that the continued bloodshed under Tinubu’s administration was unacceptable.

He said the president should either take decisive action against terrorists and criminal gangs or vacate office.

The statement has since generated intense debate online, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over recurring attacks on schools, communities, and travelers nationwide.

Tinubu Condemns Killing, Promises Rescue Efforts

President Tinubu condemned the attack, describing the killing of innocent teachers and students as barbaric.

The presidency said the federal government was working closely with the Oyo State Government and security agencies to secure the release of the remaining victims.

Tinubu also expressed optimism that security operatives would soon achieve a breakthrough in ongoing rescue operations.

Authorities reportedly arrested six suspects in connection with the attack, including alleged informants and logistics suppliers believed to have supported the kidnappers.

Mass Kidnappings Continue Across Nigeria

Kidnapping for ransom has remained one of Nigeria’s biggest security challenges in recent years, especially in rural communities and along major highways.

Although school abductions are more common in northern Nigeria, the recent attack in the southwest has raised fresh concerns about the spread of insecurity into previously calmer regions.

Parents, religious leaders, and civil society groups have continued to demand stronger security measures to protect schools and vulnerable communities.

US Expands Security Cooperation With Nigeria

Meanwhile, the United States has reportedly increased military support for Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations as both countries intensify efforts against Islamic State-linked insurgents operating in parts of northern Nigeria.

Reports indicate that the US Air Force has conducted multiple deliveries of military equipment and weapons to Nigeria in recent weeks. Nigerian authorities, however, insist that American personnel are only providing non-combat assistance and operational support.

The increased collaboration comes amid intensified military offensives targeting terrorist strongholds across the country.

Recently, US President announced that a joint operation involving American and Nigerian forces eliminated Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as a senior ISIS commander.

Trump praised both the US military and Nigerian Armed Forces for what he called a “meticulously planned” mission against terrorism.

President Tinubu also confirmed the operation and commended the growing partnership between Nigeria and the United States in tackling insurgency and violent extremism.

Nigerians Demand Urgent Security Reforms

As insecurity continues to claim lives across different regions, many Nigerians are demanding urgent reforms in the country’s security architecture.

Analysts say the federal government faces mounting pressure to produce visible results in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping before public confidence deteriorates further.

The killing of Oyedokun has now become another painful symbol of the deepening security crisis confronting Africa’s most populous nation.
