Described as one of Nigeria’s most vital transport arteries, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project connects the Federal Capital Territory to at least 12 states across the North-Central, North-West, and North-East regions. Tinubu highlighted the road’s socio-economic importance in enhancing trade, transportation, and regional development. In a bid to maximize the project’s benefits, the President approved an additional 11-kilometre extension to link the road to the Aminu Kano International Airport. Solar Lighting and Safety Enhancements for the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Project
President Tinubu also directed that the entire length of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project be fitted with solar-powered street lights. Minister of Works, David Umahi, lauded Tinubu’s leadership and strategic investment in Nigeria’s infrastructure sector, especially in road development. He confirmed that the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project will be constructed using reinforced concrete pavement, a more durable alternative to asphalt. Umahi disclosed that the 700-kilometre project comprises 350 kilometres each way, stretching from Abuja through Niger State to Kaduna, Zaria, and Kano. So far, Julius Berger has completed 480 kilometres of the Kano section. The minister revealed that Sections I and III, totaling 118 kilometres, have already been awarded at a cost of N252 billion, with 30 percent of the funds paid upfront to the contractor. Section II, which spans 82 kilometres each way (164 kilometres total), is estimated to cost N525 billion. Altogether, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project is expected to cost nearly one trillion naira, making it one of the largest infrastructure investments in the history of Nigeria’s road sector. As part of efforts to promote transparency, Umahi announced plans for zonal engagements across all six geopolitical zones.
