ASUU Shotsdown Universities Over NLC Indefinite Strike

BY DAYO ADESULU

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has today shots down universities across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria over the indefinite industrial actions announced by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Monday morning announced its participation in the ongoing strike organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). The decision was made due to the failure of the Federal Government to meet the unions’ minimum wage demand.

In a statement released on Monday, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke directed lecturers across the country to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress. The NLC declared an indefinite strike action starting from Monday, 3rd June, 2024, in response to the government’s inability to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and the reversal of the electricity tariff hike.

ASUU branch chairpersons have been instructed to mobilize all members to participate in the strike action. The union stands in solidarity with the nationwide strike and supports the demands put forth by the NLC and TUC.

The statement reads: “The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, 3rd June, 2024, as a result of the failure of Government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff.

“Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress.

“Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilise all members to participate in the strike action. Yours in the struggle.”
