Buhari Assures Nigerians that Human Right is Guaranteed Under His Watch

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, December 8, assured Nigerians that the fundamental human right is guaranteed under his watch.

The president while speaking at the 2019 National Human Rights awards ceremony in Abuja said his administration is focused on promoting and protecting the rights of every Nigerian citizen.

The president also said that his administration will always respect the rule of law and sanctity for human lives across the nation.

Represented by the solicitor-general of the federation, Dayo Akpata, the president said his administration’s commitment to protecting fundamental human rights can be seen in the fact that Nigeria is a party to all important international human rights instruments.

Also speaking at the occasion, the coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme, Edward Kellon, called on the NHRC strategise ways to ensure the rights of every Nigerian is protected by the end of 2019 National Human Rights Summit.

Kellon said it is unfortunate that the rights of women were still not defended in the political space as Nigeria was yet to realise the 35% affirmative provision for women in politics.

The vice president said he could not attend the event because he was attending a peace and religious tolerance forum in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Osinbajo also said that it would be inappropriate to receive the award in view of the developments on Friday, December 6, where the publisher of Sahara Reporters’, Omoyele Sowore, was re-arrested in a dramatic manner in a Federal High Court Abuja by operatives of the State Security Services.
