Daniel Bwala Dismisses Past Criticism of Tinubu, Says His Opposition Remarks Were ‘Not Relevant’

President Tinubu and Daniel Bwala

By DAYO ADESULU

Abuja, Nigeria – The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Policy, Daniel Bwala, has stated that all the negative remarks he made about President Bola Tinubu and his administration are no longer relevant.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, Bwala admitted that his previous criticisms were purely political, as he was in the opposition at the time.

Bwala’s Political Shift: From Opposition to Presidential Aide

  • Before the 2023 election, Bwala left the All Progressives Congress (APC) after the party fielded a Muslim-Muslim ticket with Tinubu and Kashim Shettima.
  • He joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and became a spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar.
  • During the campaign, he harshly criticised Tinubu, comparing his election to “a night of a thousand laughs.”
  • After Tinubu’s victory, Bwala challenged the legitimacy of the administration, labeling it a “president-select” and accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of election manipulation.

Bwala’s Justification: “Criticism Was My Job”

While explaining his U-turn, Bwala said:

“I criticised Tinubu’s election and administration in the past because I was in the opposition. The opposition’s work is to criticise the sitting government and hold them accountable. My views changed after I met the President, and he saw a need to appoint me.”

When asked if he still stands by his past remarks against Tinubu, Bwala dismissed them as irrelevant.

“They are not relevant,” he stated.

A Political Reality or Opportunism?

Despite his earlier opposition, Bwala now supports Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing that since joining the government, he has been speaking positively about the President and his policies.

Bwala’s political shift has sparked debate, with some questioning the credibility of political figures who switch sides based on personal opportunities.
