- Investigation Launched into Allegations of Currency Mutilation at High-Profile Event
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken note of a viral video circulating on social media, which shows the nation’s currency, the Naira, being freely sprayed at a wedding ceremony in Kano, Kano State, on Friday, October 24, 2024.
- Allegations Against Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje
Following the video’s release, allegations have emerged implicating Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje. These claims have sparked widespread condemnation from Nigerians across various sectors, including a critical editorial from a prominent national newspaper.
- EFCC’s Investigation and Findings
As a responsible anti-corruption agency dedicated to combating currency mutilation and the dollarization of Nigeria’s economy, the EFCC promptly analyzed the video. Initial findings confirmed that the incident did indeed occur; however, it took place at the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah, not at the Goje family wedding.
Amina is the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, who is the CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise, with locations in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
- Confirmation from Hajara Seidu Haruna
Hajara Seidu Haruna has verified the authenticity of the viral video, acknowledging that the Naira abuse transpired during her daughter’s wedding dinner on October 24, 2024. The bridegroom, Ibrahim Mohammad, is from Niger Republic, and those involved in spraying Naira notes and dollar bills were reportedly from his family.
- Next Steps and Commitment to Justice
In response to the incident, the EFCC has formally invited the Nigerien groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, to appear at its national headquarters in Abuja, along with all individuals who participated in the spraying of Naira notes at the event.
While the EFCC is grateful for the heightened awareness surrounding currency abuse in Nigeria, it remains committed to ensuring that no innocent party is wrongfully accused of a crime. The Commission will continue its steadfast crusade against currency mutilation, regardless of the offender’s status.
