Gani Adams vs Sunday Igboho: Court Adjourns Case to January 2025

By DAYO ADESULU

Ibadan, Nigeria – The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has adjourned the privacy invasion lawsuit filed by Gani Adams, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, against Yoruba Nation advocate Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, until January 14, 2025. Adams is seeking N5 billion in damages, claiming that Igboho’s actions have caused harm to his reputation and privacy.

Case Details and Allegations

The case, designated as Suit No. M/1006/2024, accuses Igboho of breaching Adams’ privacy through a publication that Adams claims defamed his role and status as Aare Ona Kakanfo. Adams’ counsel, R.O. Solahudeen, acting on behalf of lead attorney Kehinde Adegbite, argued for the enforcement of Adams’ fundamental rights.

Response from Igboho’s Legal Team

Representing Igboho, defence attorneys Junaid Sanusi and Olalekan Banjo informed the court that they had not been officially served and only learned about the case through media reports. They expressed readiness to receive and respond to any formal documents from Adams’ team, which the claimant’s counsel confirmed would be facilitated through a court bailiff.

“We appeared on behalf of Adeyemo after learning of the case through news reports,” Sanusi stated after the hearing. “We’re prepared to accept the documents for the respondent.”

Court Ruling and Next Steps

Justice A.O. Lajide ruled for an adjournment to January 14, 2025, directing the claimant’s counsel to ensure that all necessary documents are served to the respondent’s team by that date. Notably, the case will proceed based on affidavits, allowing the legal representatives to argue without the presence of Adams or Igboho in court.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gani Adams is seeking N5 billion for alleged reputational damage from Sunday Igboho over a published privacy breach.
  • Igboho’s legal team expressed willingness to accept formal documentation ahead of the January hearing.
  • Justice Lajide emphasized timely document service to facilitate an efficient hearing.
