Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter Inc has unveiled new features for the platform, including calls and encrypted chat.
Last year, Musk alluded at “Twitter 2.0 The Everything App” plans, promising encrypted direct messages (DMs), longform tweets, and payments.
“Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number,” Musk stated on Tuesday in a tweet.
The call option on Twitter will bring it in line with similar services on Meta’s social media apps, Facebook, and Instagram.
Musk indicated that an encrypted version of direct chat will be available on Twitter beginning Wednesday, although he did not specify if this would be a permanent feature.
Twitter announced this week that it will begin a cleanup effort by deleting and archiving accounts that have been inactive for several years.
