Netanyahu Announces Ceasefire with Hezbollah, Based on UN Framework
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah on Tuesday, ending weeks of heavy hostilities that have devastated parts of northern Israel and Lebanon. The agreement, mediated by the United States, is anchored in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which historically called for a cessation of hostilities and measures to prevent future escalations.

In a televised address, Netanyahu stated,

“The length of the ceasefire depends on what happens in Lebanon. We will enforce the agreement and respond forcefully to any violation. We will continue united until victory.”

The truce is expected to allow displaced residents in northern Israel to return home while maintaining Israel’s right to act against threats originating from Lebanon.

Shifting Focus: Iran and Hamas
Netanyahu emphasized that the ceasefire would enable Israel to pivot its attention toward countering broader threats, including Iranian influence in the region, and increasing pressure on Hamas.

He also remarked that Hezbollah had been significantly weakened during the conflict, stating,

“We have pushed them decades back.”

Lebanon’s Call for Calm Amidst Crisis
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed support for the ceasefire, highlighting the urgent need to halt the devastation. Clashes since September have displaced thousands and caused widespread destruction in southern Lebanon and central Beirut.

The Lebanese health ministry reports over 3,700 casualties since October 2023, with most occurring in recent weeks. Mikati called for immediate implementation of the truce to facilitate humanitarian relief and prevent further loss of life.

US Mediators Express Optimism
US officials involved in brokering the agreement expressed hope that the ceasefire would restore calm and pave the way for humanitarian aid to reach affected regions.

The ceasefire marks a critical moment in efforts to stabilize the region after weeks of escalating violence, but its durability remains uncertain as both sides reserve the right to respond to violations.
