A proposal to change Nigeria’s name to the United African Republic has been greeted with stiff criticism by Nigerians across the country.
The House of Representatives Special Committee on Constitution Review on Wednesday received a proposal to change Nigeria to the ‘United African Republic’.
The proposal that was submitted by Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant to the committee at the South-West zonal public hearing, explained that the new name was necessary as the name Nigeria was given by our colonial master.
However, no sooner than this was mentioned than Nigerians took to their Twitter handle and lambasted the initiator of the idea with unfriendly words.
Many queries if the change of name is the very problem bedevilling the country that needs urgent attention. This just as many Nigerians also perceived some sinister motive behind the new name United African Republic {UAR}.
In the first place, they demand an explanation of what United Africa is got to do with the new name. Some Nigerian have accused the lawmakers of planning to bring other Fulanis in other countries to Nigeria, while some said it is a ploy to escape paying Nigeria’s international debts.
Here are some Nigerian tweets:
”Come to think of it. The United African Republic sounds great. The problem is that. We can never be United. If Pakistan and India couldn’t work as one nation. then the United African Republic will still never work.”
