Pontiff Faces High Risk of Sepsis Amid Ongoing Health Battle

Pope Francis

By Dayo Adesulu with Agency Reporter

Pope Francis, 88, is in critical condition after suffering an asthmatic respiratory crisis while receiving treatment for pneumonia, the Vatican medical team confirmed. The leader of the Catholic Church has been hospitalized for over a week at Gemelli Hospital in Rome as concerns grow over his fragile health.

Doctors Warn of Sepsis Risk

According to the Associated Press (AP), the pope’s latest health setback required high-flow oxygen therapy. Doctors have expressed serious concerns about the risk of sepsis, a life-threatening condition that can cause total organ failure.

The Vatican reported that Pope Francis is experiencing increased pain, with his condition deteriorating compared to the previous day. Blood transfusions were also administered after tests revealed a condition related to anemia.

Pope Francis Aware of Health Risks

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of medicine and surgery at Gemelli Hospital, stated that the pontiff is fully aware of the danger he faces.

“He knows he’s in danger, and he told us to relay that,” Dr. Alfieri said.

The pope was initially hospitalized on February 14 following worsening bronchitis, which later developed into a complex respiratory infection affecting both lungs.

Vatican Prescribes ‘Absolute Rest’

Medical experts have prescribed absolute rest, cortisone and antibiotics, and supplemental oxygen when needed. Doctors stress that managing the risk of infection is now their top priority.

“Sepsis, combined with his age and respiratory problems, would be incredibly difficult to overcome,” Dr. Alfieri warned.

The global Catholic community continues to pray for Pope Francis’ recovery as he battles this serious health crisis.
