Resident Feared Dead In Jigawa Building Collapse

At least one person was killed in an early morning building collapse in the Birniwa local government area of Jigawa state.

The police public relations officer of Jigawa state command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, who confirmed the unfortunate incident, said it occurred at around 5:47 am on Saturday.

The PPRO said the victim died on the spot while others were injured.

He said a police detective rushed to the scene and conveyed the victims to Birniwa General Hospital for examination and treatment and it was there that the seven persons were confirmed dead.

Adam said that the police did not suspect any foul play as the building that collapsed was built with mud.

The PPRO, who earlier said seven people died on the spot while one person was injured, later called our reporter to confirm that only one person was confirmed dead, adding that the six other persons who were thought to have died were only unconscious and are now receiving treatment.

He said a police detective rushed to the scene and conveyed the victims to Birniwa General Hospital for examination and treatment.

In a related development, ten persons have been rescued from a canoe capsize in Kafin Hausa local government area of the state.

The canoe reportedly capsized between the Tage and Tafa villages of the local government.

Daily Trust reports that cases of boat mishaps have been recurring incidents in the state in the last weeks with as many as five cases reported that have left at least 19 people dead.
