Russian Tycoon Wins Case against UK, US

Russian business tycoon, Oleg Deripaska has won a case against UK and US international newspapers.

A COURT in Russia this week ruled that three international newspapers must retract articles written about the Russian business man.

According to CAJ News, the Krasnodar Territory Arbitration Court ordered British newspapers, The Times and The Telegraph, as well as US publication, The Nation, to remove articles written in the period between 2008 and 2012 about Mr. Deripaska.

The Russian court ruled that the articles unjustly defamed the reputation of the entrepreneur.

According to the plaintiff’s representative Alexei Melnikov, the articles in question were a violation of media ethics as they made criminal accusations against his client without the provision of any evidence.

The articles in question were used by the US Office for Foreign Asset Control as the grounds for imposing sanctions on Deripaska in 2018. The US Treasury Department introduced sanctions against the businessman, as well as the companies he controlled.

Representatives of the defendants have neither appeared in court nor submitted a response to Deripaska’s lawsuit.

“The fact that the defendants did not respond to the lawsuit, does not mean that they are not following the progress of the case,” CAJ News quoted a spokesperson for the businessman saying.

Deripaska’s representative believes there is a likelihood of the defendants appealing the ruling by the Krasnodar Territory Arbitration Court.

Deripaska is currently engaged in a lawsuit against the US Treasury to dispute his inclusion in the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) List.
