The Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC, has threatened to bring the economy to a complete halt beginning with a two-day warning strike the next week.
Tuesday, September 5, and Wednesday, September 6, will see the warning strike.
Following Thursday’s meeting of the National Executive Council, or NEC, of the Congress, the decision to take action was made.
The resolution was read to the media by the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, on Friday. “NEC in session of NLC resolved to embark on a total and indefinite shutdown of the nation within 14 working days or 21 days from today until steps are taken by the government to address the excruciating mass suffering and the impoverishment experienced throughout the country,” he said.
To start a two-day “warning strike” on September 5 and 6, 2023, in order to show that we are prepared for a longer strike later in the month and to demand that the government leave the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) illegally occupied national headquarters.
The NLC also decided to hold a large demonstration and rally in Imo State before the end of September.
The intensified attacks on labor unions by the government and its agents, according to Laboir, were another cause for concern.

According to Ajaero, the government’s blatant lack of interest in including the appropriate parties in social discourse justified the proposed strike action.
He said that the Federal Government had failed to negotiate with organized labor on crucial problems related to the regrettable increase in petroleum prices, which had caused misery among Nigerian workers and the general populace.
The governments and their agents in Nigeria are once again attacking labor unions and their leadership, he claimed.
In order to appoint its own executive, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, national headquarters has been unlawfully invaded and seized by the police on the orders of some forces using the name of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as cover.
