Minister of Works Summoned to Address Contractor Abandonment

ABUJA– The Nigerian Senate has officially summoned the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, to provide an explanation regarding the abandonment of the Ogbomoso-Oyo Federal Road project by its contractor. This decision follows growing concerns about the adverse effects of the project’s neglect on local communities and economic activities.

Senate Committee Takes Action

In a decisive move, the Senate has tasked the Committee on Works, led by Senator Barinada Mpigi (PDP, Rivers South-East), to investigate the circumstances surrounding the contractor’s departure from the site. The committee is expected to gather insights and report back on the issue urgently.

Call for Immediate Rehabilitation Measures

The Senate has also urged the Federal Government to direct relevant authorities to expedite the rehabilitation of the old Ogbomoso-Oyo road. This action aims to prevent further disruptions and negative consequences for commuters and residents relying on the road for transportation and trade.

Background of the Crisis

The Senate’s resolutions stem from a motion titled “Urgent Need to Call on the Federal Government to Complete the Rehabilitation of the Ogbomoso/Oyo Trunk ‘A’ Road and Finish the Reconstruction of the New Ogbomoso/Oyo Expressway,” sponsored by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari (APC, Oyo North). During his presentation, Senator Buhari highlighted the critical role of transportation in facilitating trade and movement across the country.

Impact on Local Communities

Senator Buhari pointed out that the people of Ogbomoso have been facing a severe crisis following a tragic petrol tanker accident on the road, leading to traffic congestion, displacement of residents, and significant disruptions to local businesses. The situation has worsened as commuters have been rerouted to the old Ogbomoso-Oyo road, which is already under strain due to heavy truck traffic since 2020.

Ongoing Concerns and Call for Action

The Senator expressed alarm over the deteriorating condition of the temporary diversion route, which has resulted in numerous accidents, loss of life, and damage to local infrastructure. With over ten accidents reported in just a few days, the urgency for action is clear. The non-completion of this critical road segment is stifling the economic life of Ogbomoso and poses a significant risk to the broader transit network connecting northern and southern Nigeria.

In light of these pressing issues, the Senate’s inquiry into the Ogbomoso-Oyo Federal Road project represents a crucial step toward restoring safe and efficient transportation for the affected communities.
