Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, has acknowledged that he went into self-exile following the 2018 governorship election in order to earn a degree and improve his preparation for the 2022 elections.
The governor emphasized that time does not stand in the way of education if one is fully committed, speaking to the graduating students of Adeleke University’s 9th undergraduate and 5th postgraduate convocation ceremony on Sunday at the institution’s campus in Ede.
“Dr. Deji pushed me to continue. He invited me to a conference before I left for self-exile; he said I had gone through a lot and wasn’t educated, and he suggested I travel to America to finish my education.
“He said the only thing I can do for the Osun people if I’m ready to be governor is to finish my education; if I don’t, I should give up on my desire to be governor, he added. I was 60 at the time. I completed the work, however, it was not simple.

We blamed the leaders in Nigeria. How does the followership fare? Citizenship entails accountability. Leadership is not the only factor in building a nation. The country expands and develops when everyone puts in their fair share.
Holding your leaders accountable is a good place to start. Active citizenry is what has made developed democracies what they are. Nigeria can yet be rebuilt by the young. My optimism is based on a variety of factors. Within 10 to fifteen years, if you are committed to changing the narrative and making a difference, you can.
“Observe Nigerians living abroad. Nigerians are among the top medical brains in America. Nigerians follow India in terms of IT. They succeed because they live in a society where the people who follow the leadership hold them responsible for good administration.
“Modify the story. Let you be the first to alter for a better and newer Nigeria. We must prevent youth corps members from working with election tampering. Let’s put an end to followers damaging public facilities. Let’s stop recent grads from indulging in mindless financial rituals in place of entrepreneurship, the speaker said.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Solomon Adebola, stated during his convocation speech that out of the 537 first-degree graduates, 53 received first class, 326 received second class higher, 154 received second class lower, and only 4 received third class.
He said, “The University produced 31 Ph.D. graduates, 39 Master’s degree graduates, four postgraduate diploma graduates, and one Master of Philosophy graduate.”
