Obasanjo Warns That Elections May Make Or Mar Nigeria

President Obasanjo warns Nigeria on the impact of 2023 election

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo, warns that Nigeria’s 2023 elections might make or break the country.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo noted that if clerics allow the political class to wreck Nigeria, “everyone would regret it”

When Reverend Daniel T. Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), paid him a courtesy call at his penthouse residence at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, Obasanjo spoke.

“If you stand on the truth, you stand for justice and equity, then the politicians will not be able to mess us around and I will say it with all sense of responsibility now, if we do not watch it, the politicians will wreck this country and we all regret it.

You religious leaders have a big part to play in helping us figure out where to look for salvation. I believe it is a historical error to claim that politics is not for the righteous (especially in Christendom). The unrighteous will smear the righteous with the unrighteousness they will bring into politics and will have nowhere to go if we remove the righteous from politics and leave it to the unjust.

And if we don’t pay attention to the upcoming election, it might make or break Nigeria. And I fervently hope that it will create Nigeria,” Obasanjo reportedly remarked.

Obasanjo praised the CAN President for working with Saad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, to advance national peace.

In his speech, Okoh praised the former President for his efforts to revive Christianity in the nation, saying that he had made significant contributions to Christianity.

He stated, “He (Obasanjo) began by establishing this group, the CAN, in 1976. In September 1999, he established the Inter Religious Faith Council 1999. You established the National Political Reform Conference in the political sphere, and I have the honor of serving as a delegate there on behalf of Christianity. As I was preparing for this visit, these were the only ones I could recall.

“Baba, you have had significant political roles throughout Nigerian and African history, especially in the Horn of Africa, where you are currently tasked with maintaining peace in the region. Without a doubt, these are respectable contributions to Christianity.

Regarding Obasanjo’s challenge to clergy, Okoh stated that the Inter Religious Council recently decided in Lagos to “not leave the political space to the politicians, that the religious leaders must get involved, not to be partisan, but, must give leadership to make sure that the values of our religion are brought to the space to help us to live in peace and work for the unity of the nation, including fighting for justice. Baba’s call has our full commitment.
