At the UN General Assembly on Thursday, world leaders pledged to step up efforts to extend universal health coverage to all individuals by 2030. Countries vowed to take decisive action and give resources in a historic political declaration adopted at the UN headquarters in order to achieve the challenging health objective.
According to the most recent figures, at least 4.5 billion people, or more than half of the world’s population, do not have access to all of the necessary health services. According to the World Health Organisation, millions of people are forced into poverty while attempting to receive essential medical care and medications.
Foreign Ministers and other leaders also met on Thursday to lay out their visions for the Summit of the Future, which is set to take place in September 2024. The major summit is being hailed as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reinvigorate multilateralism, address gaps in global governance, and reaffirm existing commitments.
“The Summit of the Future is a unique opportunity to help rebuild trust and bring outdated multilateral institutions and frameworks into line with today’s world, based on equity and solidarity,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
