Israeli Military Says Weapons Were Intended for Attacks on Troops
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it carried out an airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip that killed several armed militants after they were allegedly spotted transporting weapons intended for attacks on Israeli troops operating in the area.
According to the Israeli military, the operation took place on Monday after surveillance identified a group of armed members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, along with other armed individuals, moving weapons into a vehicle before entering it.
The IDF said intelligence indicated that the weapons were intended for use in attacks against Israeli forces deployed in southern Gaza.
Airstrike Conducted After Surveillance
The military said the group was monitored before an aircraft was directed to strike the vehicle and the armed individuals nearby in what it described as an operation to eliminate an immediate threat.
Israeli officials stated that the strike was carried out after confirming the presence of the armed suspects and assessing the potential risk to troops operating in the area.
IDF Says Precautions Were Taken
The IDF said it implemented measures to reduce the risk of civilian casualties before carrying out the strike. These measures included the use of precision-guided munitions and continuous aerial surveillance to verify the target.
Israel has repeatedly stated that it seeks to target armed groups while taking steps to minimize civilian harm during military operations.
Troops Remain Deployed in Southern Gaza
The Israeli military said forces under the Southern Command remain deployed in parts of the southern Gaza Strip in line with the existing ceasefire arrangements.
According to the IDF, troops will continue operations against what it describes as immediate security threats while maintaining their positions in the area.
The military also released aerial footage that it said shows the identification of the armed individuals before the strike.
