Ronald Kayanja, the director of the United Nations Information Centre, has urged young girls and women to pursue jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as these fields are not just reserved for men.
This statement was delivered by Kayanja on Tuesday in Abuja at the 2023 International Girls in ICT Day, which was put on by UNIC in association with the Women’s Technology Empowerment Center and Tek Experts.
The Director urged girls to alter the perception that some professions are only for men in a UN statement, copies of which were provided to our correspondent.
You must alter the gender-based prejudices that society has assigned to particular professions and careers, particularly those in STEM, he said.
Ronald Kayanja added, “You can only achieve this if you have aspirations, work hard in your academics, and develop a passion for ICT.
Oluseyi Soremekun, UNIC’s National Information Officer, who was a representative for Kayanja, recalled that the UN’s International Telecommunication Union had predicted a skills shortage of over two million positions in the information and communications technology sector over the next five years.
He urged all young women and schoolgirls to learn ICT skills in order to be prepared for a lucrative career in the field.
Gbolahan Olusanya, the country director of Tek Experts, allayed the schoolgirls’ concerns about STEM and ICT by revealing that his company had taught 500 females who are assuage succeeding in the field.

According to Mary Ajibola, the FCT Secondary Education Board’s Assistant Director of Bilateral and International Relations, the management of SEB is unwavering in encouraging girls to continue their studies in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
She expressed her gratitude to the UN Information Centre and its collaborators for planning the event and inviting three of the FCT’s schools to take part.
The event was attended by 90 girls from four secondary schools and the W.Tec ‘Make Her Space Girls’. The schools included Premiere Academy Lugbe, Government Secondary School, Garki, Model Secondary School, Maitama, and Government Secondary School.
