Bandits Take Solar Panel, Drugs From Family, Then Free Abuja Chief’s Son

Ibrahim Sarki, the son of the village leader of Tekpeshe community in the Gurdi ward of the Abaji Area Council of Abuja, was freed by bandits after the family gave them N436,700 to buy a solar panel, medications, and food.

On September 9, 2022, robbers broke into the Tekpeshe neighborhood and kidnapped Mohammed Ibrahim Tanko, a former council member, along with 16 other people, including Ibrahim Sarki, the son of the village chief.

The ex-councillor was later freed along with 16 other prisoners, but they kept the village’s son captive and wanted an additional N8 million in ransom before releasing the victim.
After being held captive for weeks, the bandits this week threatened to convert the village chief’s son if the family didn’t pay the N8 million ransom.

The Waziri of Tekpeshe, Ibrahim Tanko, confirmed the release of the village chief’s son over the phone on Wednesday. He claimed the victim was freed on Tuesday at 9:15 p.m. at the nearby Zago village woodland in Niger state.

Tanko claimed that after pleading with the bandits multiple times, the family was required to buy a solar panel, medications, and food items worth a total of N436,700 for the bandits before the victim could be freed.
Before the chief’s son was released on Tuesday night, he claimed that the entire town had to earn money. “In fact, some people had to sell their goats and motorcycles to raise the N500,000 to purchase the commodities they asked,” he stated.

Tanko claimed that as a result of his harrowing encounter with the robbers, the victim is currently seeking treatment at an unidentified hospital in the Kwali local council of Abuja.
A text message on the victim’s release was sent to DSP Adeh Josephine, the FCT police command’s spokesperson, but she has not yet responded.
