Smart Adeyemi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged the candidate with the highest votes in the rerun of the Kogi west senatorial district election.
Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not declared Adeyemi winner of the election, the APC candidate got a total of 8,265 votes.
Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got 2,585 votes.
This is the third time an election will be held to determine the politician that will represent the senatorial district.
In August, the Kogi state national assembly/state assembly election tribunal had sacked Melaye after an application by Adeyemi that there were irregularities during the election including over-voting and non-compliance with the electoral act.
The tribunal had ordered a fresh election which held on November 16 alongside the state’s gubernatorial election.
That election was declared inconclusive by INEC, the electoral umpire, on grounds that the number of cancelled votes was higher than the margin between the PDP and APC candidates.
Saturday’s election held in 53 polling units across seven local government areas.
