Nigerians are grappling with a significant power outage after the national grid experienced a collapse on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. This marks the first major outage of the year, leaving many homes and businesses in darkness.
The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IEDC) confirmed that the system failure occurred at 11:34 AM. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), IEDC informed customers: “Please be advised that we experienced a system outage today, February 12, 2025, at 11:34 hours, affecting all our feeders. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders.”
This incident highlights ongoing issues with Nigeria’s power infrastructure, which faced approximately 12 consecutive grid collapses in 2024 alone.
In related news, the National Labor Congress (NLC) is advocating for a reversal of the recently imposed 50% telecom tariff and has declared a total boycott starting tomorrow. Additionally, the U.S. has seen political turbulence as Trump dismisses the USAID inspector general following criticism.
In other developments, a $50 million investment is set to enhance research efforts aimed at combating antimicrobial resistance treatments.
As the situation unfolds, Nigerians are left hoping for a swift restoration of power and a more stable energy future.
