President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emerged as chairman of The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In Bissau, the capital of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, he was elected chairman during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared upon the transfer of authority from the regional body’s Immediate Past Chairman: “We will take democracy seriously. Democracy is very difficult, but it is the best form of government.”
Earlier, ECOWAS member nations thanked and congratulated Nigeria for holding a successful election that resulted in Bola Ahmed Tinubu becoming the country’s president.

In his opening remarks, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, President of Guinea-Bissau and the immediate past chairman of the regional body, praised Nigeria for upholding peace and supporting democracy in the West African area.
Omar Alieu Touray, the president of the ECOWAS Commission, congratulated President Tinubu on his victory and inauguration as the leader of Nigeria, the continent’s largest economy. He said so on behalf of the community and institutions.
Touray thanked President Embaló for his efforts as ECOWAS Chair over the previous 12 months, noting the community’s numerous accomplishments.
He also expressed his congratulations to Julius Maada Bio, the president of Sierra Leone, on his reelection.
